Church Street: (west side): (view 1) Krakaeur's.

Image

A busy part of Edwardian Barnsley: Church Street between the top of Market Hill (looking down) and the Royal Hotel. Krakaur's shop with its streetside clock is prominent in the photograph. Solomon Krakaur was a well known jeweller and watchmaker. Above his shop a stylish Venetian or Palladian window adds to the status of the property. Krakauer was in business here from the 1890s through to the 1920s. This site was then taken over and developed by Butterfield & Massies. Note the tall street lamp in the distance.
