Church Street: towards obelisk (view 1)

Image

An interesting Edwardian view looking along the upper part of Church Street, towards the obelisk at the junction with Old Mill Lane, the latter once the main route into Barnsley. The obelisk was a prominent landmark known as the Mence monument after the local family of parsons that served for so many years at St Mary's. Premises on right are Obelisk Chambers. Here the street is fairly narrow and a workman can be seen on the left perhaps clearing horse 'muck'. The three people walking on the pavement on the right in fashionable clothes add interest to the street scene. And it was a sunny day, several of the shops with the awnings down providing shade to the window displays. Also note the man pushing what appears to be a hand cart down the street, no problems with traffic! The distant building on the right with its gable protruding towards the street is Foley Hall: see Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets' : vol 1, pp.38-39.
