Church Street: (view 7): Griffiths Printers

Image

This wonderful view looking up Church Street is featured on the front cover of volume 1 of the 'Tasker Streets' series of books and, inside, on page 41; it shows a postman pausing on the pavement looking directly towards the Edwardian photographer; and another postman can be seen, by a cyclist, on the left edge of the image. The building opposite the 'principal' postman is R.E. Griffiths' Printing Works, located there from 1877 to 1925, a lenghty occupancy. Next door, via the arched entrance was Lancaster Yard. The narrow nature of what was one of Barnsley's oldest streets is clearly evident in this photograph. Notice, also, the prominent 'AA' (Automobile Association' sign above the garage and above the postman's head.
