Church Street (view 8)

Image

Looking down Church Street towards Market Hill in about 1930, the Royal Hotel on the far left of the image. Clearly taken on a busy shopping and business day. But no sign of any street traffic, pedestrians easily able to wander across the road! Wright's chemist's shop on the left opended in 1923., working until 1984. The buildings on the right were demolished as part of the redevelopment post 1929/30 and the building of the town hall and mining college. See Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets' vol 1 pp 18-19.
