Church Street: (Lancaster Gate): Central Chambers

Image

Central Chambers was a prominent building with a classical portico and four storeys. Clad in stone, it was originally built as a private dwelling, but used as the town's Mechanics Institute in mid-Victorian times and then (1890-1914) by the Barnsley Bottling Company. The building also housed estate agents and architects: see E.G.Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets' : vol 1 pp 48-49. On the right of the image can be seen part of Dr Sadler's house and an adjacent shop.
