Church Street: Barnsley Grammar School

Image

An interesting early c.1910 view of the street facade of what became Barnsley Grammar School (now the Cooper Gallery). The building was soon to be remodelled as a school and often appears partly ivy-clad on the right, lower side. In mid Victorian times it was in part occupied as a Reading Room and served as the Church Institute. See E.G.Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets”: vol 1, pp 28-29. The great railway engineer Joseph Locke was a former pupil and the subsequent 'Locke Scholarships' became a feature of advertisements for access via 'competitative examinations'.
