Church Street: Commerce Buildings
Commerce Buildings was one of Barnsley's most distinctive neo-classical structures but here it can be seen after the large portico had been removed from the frontage in c.1870. The pillars were however saved and can now been seen in Locke Park. From 1875-1914 the Town Clerk, Henry Horsfield, occupied part of the first floor. In its early days the building was used as the Kings Arms Hotel and Fletcher the well-known clockmaker had rooms there. Its later usuage can be seen by reference to page 16 of E.G.Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets' (vol 1). From 1903, banking was its principal function. After demolition the site was occupied by Nat West (among others) and now Royal Bank of Scotland.
