Image

This view of Barnsley Town Hall dates from 1961 when the area to its south was occupied as a car park. The information display set between the telephone kiosks was to aid 'tourists' get a sense of place. Completed of Portland stone between 1932-33 by Briggs and Thornley, to a neo-classical design, it is now one of the best examples of an Art Deco public building in the north of England. Recently restored as part of the Experience Barnsley project, visitors can now enjoy access to a heritage experience and an urban landscaping that includes imaginative water fountains where the cars previously parked. The Discovery Centre incorporates Barnsley Archives and the building houses a very impressive Council Chamber. Perhaps the most dramatic feature is the tall tower, a landmark feature seen from afar.
