Church Street: Mining & Technical College
The Mining & Technical College pre-dated the Town Hall slightly, opening in October 1932, after over two years of building. At the time it was the largest example of its kind in the country. Built mainly of brick it nevertheless has classical features, the stone 'matching' that of the Town Hall, especially around the main entrance. A new civic and educational and training centre was therefore created in the early 1930s, both buildings representing the great pride and optimism that had been present at the time – despite the grim economic state of the region and the country as a whole. This ethos continues into the 21st century, the building now used for learning and teaching via the University Centre Barnsley.
