Church Street: Butterfields & Massies

Image

Right at the 'junction' with Market Hill stood Barnsley's most well know department stores: Butterfield & Massies where Father Christmas appeared every year. The imposing main facade (right: 'Drapery Market') was used as an iconic feature for the company in Edwardian adverts. This image dates from 1960. The central first floor facade has a Palladian window, 'chopped' somewhat by the 1960s name band running across the frontage. This prome site was used by a succession of Barnsley's Victorian drapers. See E.G.Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets' : vol 1: pp.12-13.
