Church Street: 'Deputy House' (no.37): (view 1)

Image

This fine 3-bay brick building was the home of Samuel Cooper from 1822-33 and then a succussion of other prominent Barnsley worthies including the Newmans. It was a great asset to the street and was as used by the NCB from 1948; and after rebuilding occupied by the National Association of Colliery Deputies and Shotfirers (NACODS) from 1968, hence the local name 'Deputy House'. Sadly demolished, it was replaced by a 2-storey concrete and glass structure which many people considered to be an ugly blot on the street's appearance. Thankfully also demolished now.
