Church Street: Barnsley Chronicle Offices

Image

Barnsley Chronicle (No.45: the popular weekly newspaper was established in 1858) occupied this building from the late 1920s, with their 'works' behind (Eastgate). The late Georgean frontage was adapted for public access at the ground floor level. Photographed in 1960. The building just beyond (No.47) was occupied by a variety of businesses, the longest being that of Birkitts the confectioner, from 1885-1956. See E.G.Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets': vol 1, pp.34-35 for full details. Presently, it houses the main public reception of the Chronicle alongside a bookshop.
