Church Street: 'New Design' building

Image

The New Design building near the end of modern-day Church Street, stands right at the edge of the street by the entrance to Eastgate and the new College. Dating from about 1820, it has been used by a variety of occupants and businesses and was once the Red Lion Beer House (1837-48). From about 1870 it was designated as Number 47 Church Street. The New Design stationery/printer's shop was established here from about 1962 and this image dates from 1965. Set a little further back and just visible is the Barnsley Chronicle office building. See E.G. Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets': vol1: pp.34-35. In c.1980 the properties were re-numbered, this building becoming 49-51 Church Street and the Barnsley Chronicle building number 47.
