Church Street: Barnsley College of Technology: (view 1)

Image

Barnsley's new College of Technology was opened in 1965, a very modern structure contrasting with other buildings in the area. Its design was by Lyons, Israel and Ellis, and was described as 'pleasant' by the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner in his entry for Barnsley in the West Riding edition of 'Buildings of England'. The new college building only survived until about 2012, replaced by the present and much larger Barnsley College, which has an even more dominant impact on the townscape at the end of Church Street. This image dates from 1965. See page 37 of volume 1 of E.G.Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets'.
