Church Street: old shops 41-43: East side: (view 2)

Image

Another view from the 1960s showing the row of old shops numbered 41-43, with the Barnsley Chronicle office building partly in view in the distance. This was the East side of the street, opposite St Mary's Church (some gravestones are visible in the foreground), so a prime part of old Barnsley. The Ashley Jackson art shop, following refurbishment and investigation, is now one of the most important remnants of late medieval Barnsley, it's timber structuring 'tested' to confirm a considerable antiquity.
