Church Street: Deputy House: (view 2)

Image

Another view of 'Deputy House': taken in 1973. Set alongside old shops with character and nineteenth-century buildings to the side, it's appearance did little to improve the townscape here. Dating from 1968, the protruding upper storey bay windows used as offices were supposed to reflect the designs of neigbouring structures and the concrete was meant to blend in with the locality. The architect was Sir John Burnet, Tait, Durrant and Partners. The offices were for the National Association of Colliery Overmen, Deputies and Shotfirers (NACODS).
