Townend (view 1) : 1966

Image

From Edwardian times 'Townend' at the western edge of Barnsley, where six roads converged (Dodworth Road/Peel Street, Racecommen Road/Shambles Street, Summer Lane/York Street), was a great communications hub. This image dates from 1966 and looks across towards Dodworth Road, the sign of the Wheatsheaf Hotel at the junction with Racecommen Road just visible. The curved group of properties at the corner of Summer Lane and Dodworth Road included the Co-op, the buildings here dating from about 1909.
