Doncaster Road (N.side): The Alhambra (View 1)

Image

Alhambra Cinema on a wet day in c.1961 when it was owned by the Odeon chain of picture houses. This large and imposing building was located at the junction with Wesley Street and was originally built in 1915, when the Great War was raging, as a theatre. It had over 2,500 seats. Touring companies were scarce during the war, so musical hall shows were introduced. It was converted into a cinema in 1926, eventually part of the Gaumont circuit but re-named the Odeaon in the 1950s. It closed in 1960 and was soon converted into a bingo hall prior to being demolished in the late 1980s. The Alhambra name was used for the a new shopping centre that was developed in central Barnsley shortly afterwards.
