Eldon Street (N.side) : General Booth and Harvey Institute

Image

General William Booth (1829-1912) addressing a large crowd outside Harvey Institute (Civic Hall) (from a postcard image). Founder and first general of the Salvation Army, Booth can be recognized by his uniform and flowing white beard. A horseman can be seen having difficulty in keeping the crowd at bay. Bay was one of the most popular figures in the late Victorian/Edwardian eras. He visited Barnsley in 1893 and 1902.
