Eldon Street (N.side) : The YMCA building.

Image

This postcard image of the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) probably dates from (or shortly after) its opening in 1909. This charitable organisation occupied the upper rooms. At this time, below the YMCA was Holroyd's (cleaners), Walker's (glover, outfitters) and Hinchliffe's (milliner's/hats). The now world famous YMCA was founded in London in 1844. See vol 4 of 'Barnsley Streets', pp.72-73. The Barnsley YMCA moved to Pitt Street in 1965.
