Eldon Street (N.side) : The Yorkshire Penny Bank

Image

The Yorkshire Penny Bank was established at the corner of Market Hill and Eldon Street in 1903, its 'statement' architecture making the building stand out from its neighbours. The datestone was placed under the corner clock. Public clocks were important as even at this time not everyone had a watch. The building was extended aong its Eldon Street side in 1923-24 and latterly functioned as the Yorkshire Bank/Yorkshire Building Society. This image is from 1960.
