Eldon Street (N.side) : The Empire Palace (cinema) (view 2)

Image

This postcard image showing the Empire Palace (cinema) probably dates from just after its opening in 1909. The wonderful frontage was in keeping with the theatre-like appearance of early cinemas. You could in fact get live entertainment there for the price of your cinema ticket (as well as the films). For just 6d (2.5p) entry could be gained into the 'Pit', the cheapest area for viewing. The crowded frontage cerainly helps to add interest and includes some young street cleaners. The Empire was demolished after a fire in 1955 but the replacement, the Gaumont did not have the style and gradeur of its Edwardian predecessor.
