Market Hill : general view looking north

Image

This postcard image of about 1905 shows the buildings that protruded from Shambles Street on to the top of the hill, Church Street clearly a very narrow routway. On the low right is the Kings Head Hotel. The open market place, where stalls would be erected on market days, 'explains' the wide and dominant trading space, typical of the centre of many market towns.
