Market Hill : Looking up the hill
An extremely clear view, looking up Market Hill, a typically high quality image produced as a postcard by Lamb. The fashions of the people, all quite well dressed and the parked motor vehicle suggest a date of about 1914-20. The surface of the streets are of stone sets, creating non-slip but uneven areas. Notice the tall lamp in the foreground (and another in the centre distance), close to the former Coach & Horses inn, now used as a bank. The image was taken on a non-market day. Look carefully, and you will so a policeman on duty in the middle of the junction with Eldon Street. His role as a 'director of traffic' must have been a fairly quiet one, apart from market days.
