Image

Located near the top, west side of Market Hill was one of Barnsley's most important commercial buildings, the Corn Exchange. Dating from 1852, the building was established for the trading of cereals and associated agrarian produce but was ruined by a serious fire in 1927. This was a great loss to the town, The tall windows (the lower ones having arched heads, were dominating features of a 5-bay facade that incorporated a clock in the central pediment, overlooking the market place. The building was often the place where proclamations of various kinds took place.
