Market Hill ; E.side: W.H.Smith to Guests

Image

Looking across towards the east side of Market Hill towards the Arcade entrance in the 1930s. Part of the WH Smith & Son building can be seen on the left of the image, with its 'Circulating Library' advertized above the shop entrance. Smith's had established their business here (no.16) from 1906. Next door (18) was Hagenbach's cafe, present from 1931 to 1960, their confectionery trade also extending to No. 20, by the Arcade entrance. Guest's, probably Barnsley's most famous grocers, occupied the other flank of the Arcade, at number 22.
