Image

The Westminster Bank, at the bottom of Market Hill, at the juction with Peel Square/Street, in c. 1960. This bank was esablished here in 1929 and by 1970 its name was changed to National Westminster. The building was first used as a bank, by the London City Midland, in 1912, occupying the old Coach and Horses Hotel. Reynolds & Wadsworth's ironmongery can be seen on the extreme right of the picture. Tall concrete electric lamps now formed part of the streetscape of central Barnsley. The upper floors of the building were used as offices for insurance companies, Commercial Union and Scottish Legal; and also by the accountant Irvin Loy.
