Market Hill : E.side: Spiers to Yorks Penny Bank

Image

The lower east side of Market Hill included several impressive buildings. Right at the end stood the Yorkshire Penny Bank, and a little higher the even more classical frontage of the National Provincial Bank (later the NatWest). Spiers, 'fancy goods', occupied the end premises (number 26) from 1951-1973. The lone, parked motorbike is an unusual feature! The image dates from about 1960.
