Market Hill : Lower East side c.1910
This postcard image is useful as it shows the lower east side of Market Hill at the time when motor cars had begin to make an appearance in Barnsley, though the lady and her bike add interest to the foreground, by the Coach and Horses Hotel building. The policeman in the centre, standing with a couple of locals also adds interest. The image dates from c.1910, not long before the Kings Head Hotel (seen on the right, just beyond the Yorks Penny Bank) was demolished, in about 1914. See Barnsley Streets, vol.3 pp.12-13.
