Market Hill : W.side: Royal visit of 1912

Image

Market Hill was crowded with officials and sightseers when George V and Queen Mary visited Barnsley in July 1912, several local photographers capturing the scene. The royal motorcade also visited Rylands glassworks at Stairfoot and Elsecar colliery; but sadly for many families the visit to south Yorkshire also coincided with the disaster at Cadeby colliery, near Doncaster.
