Market Street: BBCS Boot Store

Image

Another wonderful Edwardian image from the Taske Collection, this time showing one of the most important specialist stores of the BBCS: Boots! The assembly of personnel outside the shop, includes a couple of boy employees as well as two women. For women, the Co-op was an important source of employment. The man in the bowler is probably the manager, his hat an indication of status perhaps. The shop frontage is stylishly impressive, the size of the windows accommodating spacious viewing of the boots on sale within, and the central entrance way is wide, therefore very convenient for access, even when bringing a pram; as a hallway it also afforded further viewing of the goods on either side of the entrance.
