Market Street: Co-op Butchers' Hall

Image

A much used part of the BBCS was the the butchers' hall where a variety of meat including game were displayed and sold to Co-op members, some of the staff pictured outside the premises in this image take in the early 1900s. Notice the fine architectural detail of the building, the wide customer access and the use of tiles, just visible, on the interior walls. The meat itself was displayed 'open-to-view', allowing the public to see the produce unhindered by glass frontages.
