New Street (view 34) (old housing)
The upper part of New Street, from Island Corner to Princess Street, formed a part of an area of densely packed houses, many of the properties dating back to Victorian times. This Edwardian view shows terraced residences on either side of the road, those on the left reached via 3 or 4-flight steps. The children playing in the foreground, and their clothes, suggest that this was an Edwardian scene. Note also the men having a chat by the wall in the distance. Lit by an occasional gas lamp, this remained a timeless part of Barnsley through to the 1950s.
