New Street (view 49) (old shops 60-62)

Image

On the upper side of John Street/New Street were a pair of old shops: Squires and Sargeants (bakers and grocers respectively). Both disappeared in the late 1960s with the creation of the Rowland Winn garage forecourt. This Tasker image was taken shortly before demolition, in 1966. Note the 'PETROL SERVICE' sign at the upper gable end of the building.
