Dodworth Road: Marlborough Hotel

Image

A fine looking cab with its covers/hood in a closed position waits otside the Marlborough Hotel on Dodworth Road in about 1911 when Waite was the landlord. The owner/driver was Mr Tinker. Marlborough was a fairly popular name for pubs and inns, from the Duke of Marlborough (John Churchill), the famous military leader, whose family seat became the prestigious Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. However in the nineteenth century the Marlborough had a more down to earth name : the Boy and Barrel.
