Church Street : performing bears

Image

Sad to see nowadays, but performing bears were once part of street entertainments in market towns. Here we can see a good sized crowd attracted to the scene, the bears' owner looking towards the camera prior to a collection of a few pennies. An even worse activity in the market places of Barnsley was bear-baiting, a 'sport' that was evident in Barnsley, using intimidating dogs, before the 1830s.
