Barnsley Arcade: South side: decorated
Part of the northern (upper) part of Barnsley Arcade in Edwardian times, the roof of the sheltered area bedecked with decoration, possibly in celebration of a royal occasion, the coronation of George V in 1910. The shopkeepers' wares spill over on to the pavement and the surface of the road has, typically for barnsley, fine quality stone sets. Foley & Co the stationers is prominent in the right foreground and Arcade furnishing opposite. The suspended gas lighting must have added atmosphere on dull evenings and at night.
