Burlington Arcade: east side
Interesting short parade of shops on Burlington Arcade in the 1960s, prior to the redevelopment of the area and the building of the FW Woolworth store in 1973. The first 'shop' on view is the long-established Patent Glass Tubing Company premises, there from 1909 to 1961; next door is Schofields men's hairdressers (1937-62) and then Burlington Cafe (1940-62) run by Mrs Barley, occupied by the Patent Glass Tubing company from 1902-08. All independent shops. Note the upper windows opened, presumably in summer and the street furniture includes an old gas lamp converted to electricity. Part of the original stone-setted road surface is also visible. The slim 'barber's pole' is a throw back to medieval times when barbers did blood letting among other tasks. The milk churn outside the cafe is also an interesting feature, maybe a delivery of milk or or an advertising item.
