May Day Green (& Cheapside) (view 1)
This early Edwardian scene (c.1905) shows part of May Day Green (where the great gas lamp is bedecked with flags, an armorial shield and bunting); and a range of shops, businesses and residences along Cheapside. A young man puposefully strides towards the photographer; others are enjoying a chat or are busy on the pavement. Notice the large advertising sign, probably being carried! And the banner above the street proclaimining: THE MARKETS ARE YOURS USE THEM: modern advertising could not have done better! Look closely and you will see barrows and tram lines in the foreground. Within the tram lines are signs of horse transport too. The street is clearly 'cobbled' that is stone-setted. Barnsley had a great deal of character on market days especially.
