Queen Street: (view 1)

Image

An Edwardian (c.1911) view of one of Barnsley's oldest streets, Queen Street, with May Day Green and Cheapside in the far distance. The road surface is stone setted and the main traffic is horse and cart or carriage. The street is clearly celebrating an occasion – probably the coronation of George V. On the north side Joseph Corker's boot shop is just visible and nearby stood the Three Cranes Hotel. Across the road at No. 5 Goodison's (mantles etc) were havin a clearance sale. Look above ground level and you will see a venetian or palladian window inserted rather grandly in the stone facade, facing the bottom of Market Hill.
