Queen Street (view 5)

Image

A superb view looking along Queen Street towards the bottom of Market Hill in about 1910. Some parked horse traffic is just visible but, mostly, people casually walk along the street without any fear of clashing with vehicles. Biccycles were all the rage then and notice the fashions of the women, men and boys: and everone looks smart, few not wearing a hat or cap. No wonder that there were so many clothing and hatters shops in bustling Barnsley. The cyclist nearest the camera appears to be a man of the cloth. Bailey's hatters and hosier's shop sign is well visible; as is the Maypole Diary and Jackson's (yet another hatter's shop).
