May Day Green: General Booth's visit in 1905

Image

General' Booth received a great welcome when he visited Barnsley on 11 August 1905, the scene captured by a photographer from the Barnsley Photo Company and reproduced on one of their postcards. Booth, in his Salvation Army uniform, can be seen waving to the crowd on May Day Green, people assembled 4-5 deep on either side of the motorcade. William Booth (1829-1912) had founded the Salvation Army and became its first General. His visit to Barnsley was part of a nationwide tour and at the time he was one of the best known public figures of the Edwardian period.
