Peel Square (16) West side : Chronicle Buildings
This image dating from 1960 shows the west side of the Square and in particular 'Chronicle Buildings' then used by the York & County Savings Bank. This distinctive structure was erected in 1877 and functioned as a fashionable Coffee Tavern for many years, and then a Beauty Parlour. Its usage as the offices of the Barnsley Chronicle was during the Second World War and much earlier, from 1880 to 1930. By 1995 the building served as as the Tommy Wallocks pub, named after the local Barnsley character.
