Peel Street (2) : Olympic Skating Rink (view 1)

Image

This Edwardian postcard image shows a charabanc and crowd of sightseers outside the Olympic Skating Rink. Located in the Townend area, at the corner of Peel Street and York Street, the Rink was a very popular entertainment/sports facility at a time when roller skating was all the rage. Inside there was a restaurant and even a band playing music for the skaters and their families and friends. The building was probably named in the wake of the 1908 Olympic Games held in London. From 1920 it was adapted for use as a cinema – known as The Pavilion - but was lost in a serious fire in about 1950.
