Peel Street (10) : South side : The Ritz Cinema (view 1)

Image

One of Barnsley's best Art Deco buildings was demolished in 1974, a great loss to the town not just on architectural grounds but also because of its long associations with local families since it opened as a modern purpose-built cinema in 1937. Its unmistakable facade, neon-lit at night, formed a striking image alng an otherwise dull streetscape but all was lost after clearance and the erection of an unmemorable supermaket.
