Pitt Street (12) : South : 'Ellis's School'

Image

A National School, also known as Ellis's was located at the corner of Blucher Street. It had a distinctive late Georgian frontage, dating back to about 1815 and after demolition in the 1960s was the site was used for the erection of the YMCA building. The plaque set in the large pediment at the front of the building refers to its 'FREE SCHOOL' status, part of the Ellis Charity, though a small charge may have been imposed for each pupil to attend.
