Pitt Street (16) : South : The Convent

Image

This fine group of attractive stone-built properties helped to confirm Pitt Street as one of the best-looking parts of central Barnsley. The buildings to the left – with distinctive 'dormer' extension – served as a Convent (of the Sisters of Mercy) from about 1900. The remainder of the group were used by the Barnsley Conservative Association as their headquarters. The Convent was demolished during the clearances for the building of the town Relief Road and Bridge. The original sash windows and classical doorways remain as distinctive features.
