Cheapside/May Day Green (view 1)

Image

The frontages of part of Cheapside can be seen on this image, probably dating from the interwar period; and a deserted May Day Green dominates the scene. A lone pedestrian is caught by the camera. This image helps us to appreciate that May Day Green was a relatively large open-space area, coming to life of course on market days. Note the telephone kiosk by the oild lamp at the far centre of the image, a sign of changing times.
