May Day Green: Gaunts (jewellers)

Image

Gaunt's was a family jewellers established in Barnsley from at least the 1890s. The shop front is an outstanding example of what a well-stocked jewellers looked like in Edwardian and later times. Gaunts were popular for obtaining wedding and other special gifts and retailed their own timepieces. Note the central clock and the reference to Grenwich time, a feature to attract public attention
