Prince of Wales public house

Image

Located at the junction of Old Mill Lane and Eldon Street North, the Prince of Wales was a distinctive building occuping a corner plot of land. For many years a Barnsley Bitter (John Smith's) house, its royal name contrasted with the largely working-class area that it served, but it remained a popular pub until demolition in the 1980s. Its landlords can be traced back to the early 1850s : see EG Tasker's 'Barnsley Streets', vol. 4 p166.
